isn't the rif that was announced was for non-management employees? i'm the last to hear most things, but as far as i know a rif hasn't been announced for engineering. did i miss something? jeannie d. said that the execs were still evaluating the 3Q financials to decide if a rif were necessary for us. of course the company would look at reducing contractors first. hmmm...i wonder why she said that? mike daigles fact sheet said that if a rif hadn't been announced when the union filed to organize the employees then the company would have to bargain with the union to lay off workers. the VPs have been trying to tell us that we'll get no job security with a yes vote and they point to the techs hired after 2003. those techs have a no contractor clause and none of them will be removed from the property to be replaced by contractors.

Wished I had a box of Kleenex to wipe away Daigles's tears today when he was trying his best to paint a pictiure of the destitute pockets of Verizon. Save your roadshows, Mike - The YES vote is only getting bigger the more you open your mouth.
I heard that Daigle seemed pretty cavalier dismissing the nothing special BAU profile of his Potomac represented engineers - no different than any other engineers - post 03 people getting rif'd, etc. Perhaps a swath from Mass. to NY through Jersey and then VA may help? Can you hear us now ???
There is a time for everything and now is the time for UNION. My decision is not anti company or anything like that. My decision is what I feel is best for me, just like the company needs to make decisions that is best for them. I know that I am going to vote for the Union on Tuesday.

People are reacting to the company's continued RIFs. Why haven't they though about letting the contractors go before. The company is only reacting to the fed up engineers' interest in the Union. Otherwise do you think they would be getting rid of contractors? What about all the off prem on prem talk about contractors. I refuse to be a puppet on a string. I would like a change. Any way you choose is unknown, but at least I am willing and not afraid to make a change.
We received another worthless letter from Daigle today, Friday. It talks about the Union's track record and more scare tactics from the company. What it doesn't talk about is the company's track records on how they treat lower level managements. Lets forget about us (engineers) for a moment and take a look at our counter part as such CXM and EI. They have already been informed of a 25%-30% RIF of all CXM and EI foremen. Notices will be sent out October and they will have to be off payroll by November 31st. Why does it matter you may asked? Well at certain garage locations, the company has already hired contract foremen from the previous RIF, so how come these contract foremen aren't the first go? Call any foremen to ask them if this is true and how they feel about the whole situation. They are sitting ducks waiting to get tap on the shoulder with no recourse. What make us think we are immuned to the company's contunious unfair treatment? The company's track record speaks for themself. Tuesday, September 15th, 2009 and a vote "YES" is our last opportunity to demand for changes.
Mike, Jeannie, Eddy and Bill are saying all the right things in their meetings, emails and letters. Its too bad their boss, Claire Beth Nogay does not feel the same. Does anyone remember the eweb broadcast where she said something like - Of course we are going to keep contracting out work. Why wouldn't we?
I am insulted by the implication in Friday's email that engineers are going to turn into people that spit, swear at and threaten the lives of management. And btw if the behavior was so bad in previous strikes, why wasn't anything done to the perpetrators? The few who were fired all got their jobs back eventually. Management was expected to cross picket lines in dangerous condtions and we are only hearing about it now?
Look, I never expected to join a union. I feel we have no choice. First levels have had many earned benefits taken away and been RIFFED in large numbers while upper level management makes outrageous salaries and union members enjoy the status quo. How long did you expect us to put up with it?
I plan on voting NO, if by unlucky chance the union is voted in I plan on signing the exempt card and if there is a strike I plan on crossing the line.

In today's complex business environment and telecommunications industry there will probably never be such an important decision for a group of Verizon employees to make, such as the choice to unionize or not. As a 22 year phone company employee and now a union representative, I would like to commend those engineers who have stood up to support unionization.
I read a recent e-mail that has been sent out about the unions touting its track record. The economic realities Verizon faces and the layoffs they are beginning to initiate have nothing to do with the union s track record, it has to do with Verizon's vision to withdraw from investing and pushing the FiOS services. Layoffs are not because of the union but because of Verizon's insistence to scale back their FiOS program. Unlike what Verizon has consistently done over the years, especially in the engineering department, contracting out the bargained for work will not be done with the union jobs.
The IBEW members throughout the New England area have had many opportunities to take a voluntary leave from the service of the company by taking the Enhanced Income Protection Plan package. (EIPP) This allows senior members or any other member seeking to leave Verizon to take up to a $76,000 payment to leave the company. These steps are utilized to save jobs, however now Verizon insists on scaling back the FiOS program and the extra people they hired to install FiOS. While this is unfortunate, it is disingenuous to blame the union or the economy in letting these employees go. The e-mail you received Friday, mentions "Regrettably" and yes it is regrettable that Verizon would infer that it has anything to do with the union or the economy.
The job security clause covered the people up to 2003 and did not cover people who were not hired yet. In 2008 bargaining, Verizon had no interest in extending the 2003 date to cover employees who had since been hired. As some people inferred, there was no effort to exclude any employees in 2003 bargaining, the language dealt with all employees on the property at that time.
The IBEW New England union locals are working with the Massachusetts AFL-CIO and the State of Massachusetts, Department of Workforce Development in setting up clinics and workshops for unemployment, career counseling, training and development, resume writing, and providing information on health care benefits once they are released. Verizon has not initiated any proactive steps to help these people while many companies throughout the Commonwealth of Massachusetts have initiated proactive steps to help employees that they layoff. with the Department of Workforce Development.
What has also been unfortunate is the practice of Riffing managers who are close to their retirement and barely having enough qualified managers to run the day to day operations. In IBEW 2321, like the rest of the unions in New England, we are adamant that nobody should help Verizon eliminate more management jobs by taking set-ups. We should not be helping them to eliminate jobs, management or non-management and if any union member wants to go into a first level position, then they should. The bottom line is that many of the good people that Verizon forced out by Riffing them should still be here today working if Verizon needs to set-up union members to take their place. Verizon of course has put their own spin on set-ups.
I encourage the engineers to unionize.
With no representation your jobs will continue to be contracted out. If you have nothing to gain through joining a union, why is Verizon trying so hard to keep you from joining one?

Look folks contractors are people too, we chose to leave and were asked to come back for 1/3 the cost to the company. If for a second you don't believe that the company wouldn't get rid of all of you for contractors you're sadly mistaken, heck they may even ask you to come back after they RIF you. Will the union make it better, who knows, many of us were already on that side and chose to leave. The decision is yours make it the right one. There will never be any job security at Verizon, union or otherwise. Believe this its no easier be let go from a company that you worked many years for either way.
One more day and this nightmare will be over. It will be good to be entirely focused on doing our jobs and not worried about what a union would do to those jobs and how we conduct ourselves.
I am confident the NO vote will win and that Verizon will be better off for not having another group of it's employees in the union.

On the eve of the Vote I'm not sure if there are any still undecided. After reading all the blogs and correspondence from both sides I think it comes down to this. Like most of you I have opinions on our recent benefit changes, contractors, job security, the economy, Ivan's Salary, Verizon's multi billion $ profits, etc. However, logically those things don't really matter here - what does matter is what would the bargaining power of a Union of 269 Engineers in 2 states be. A group that would probably be hesitant to strike (and if they did would not get full participation). A group that could be fairly easily be replaced by retirees, contractors and Engineers in other states. A group whose contract would probably not align with others. A group of somewhat reluctant pioneers which the Company will no doubt attempt to make it difficult for, to avoid encouraging others.
I think this could backfire on us and we could end up in without a contract for some time and then ultimately end up worse off when and if one is finally agreed to.

good luck to all. Just heard RIF number and timeframes will be excelerated. Anywhere from 20% to 30% across the board. Let's see how much of Daigle's "the company will negotiate with you individually" lasts beyond the RIF announcement.
I guess engineering is just a microcosm of the nation in general, run by women and cowards. God help this group and this once great nation. Thank you to the union and the brave folks who got the ball rolling and tried to organize this group.

A day where full time employees would be recognized for their contributions to the success of this company and not be replaced by contractors.
