FAQ's

This question came up at one of the meetings with management. They stated that even after the vote to join the union has taken place and is approved by the engineers the company can still RIF the engineers prior to having a ratified contract. I thought things would be frozen during this time period.

After a successful election; The IBEW will become the bargaining representative for the engineers group immediately. If the company wishes to go forward with a RIF that affects members of the union, they must negotiate the terms with the union. Contrast this with the current situation: The company can decide now, on a whim, to lay off employees. There is no prescribed process, no explanation necessary, and no protection afforded to any engineer. The minute that the engineers form a union, the company must bargain fairly with the employees’ union and can no longer make unilateral decisions. This type of vital job protection is exactly why the company is combating the engineers effort to form a union.
